Salicylic Acid

There are some acne treatments I prefer over others, and salicylic acid is one of them.  I don’t prefer it for more severe cases of acne because it only treats superficial blemishes, but this is a great product for common breakouts, like whiteheads and blackheads. It’s fairly cheap but has several applications. I like it mainly because it has been scientifically proven to work without actually causing side effects.

Salicylic acid is a type of phenolic acid. It’s commonly used to treat a variety of growths and superficial skin conditions, like warts, psoriasis, acne, ringworm, and even dandruff. It is used as a key ingredient in thousands of skincare products. It works by cleansing the skin of dirt and excess oil – the perpetrators of most new breakouts. If you use a chemical exfoliator, it likely has a high salicylic acid content.

Lots of people like salicylic acid because it’s been around for a long time. You can find it in serums and cleansers at concentrations between 0.5 and 2%, as well as in higher concentrations in spot treatments. This ingredient is also a peeling agent for treating acne scars and sun damage, making it an effective solution to various superficial skin problems. A fun fact: it’s related to aspirin, meaning it also has anti-inflammatory properties. Often used in conjunction with benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid is a wonderful over-the-counter product for forms of mild and moderate acne. If you have anything more serious, however, or if this ingredient doesn’t treat your breakout, consider seeing a dermatologist.
