Sebaceous Cyst

Acne appears, in part, because the pores get clogged. Skin is continuously producing sebum, but sometimes that sebum becomes trapped below the skin’s surface. Normally, it flows out of the skin to create its own moisturizer, allowing our skin to remain soft. However, when your skin produces too much sebum, it will dry and get caught, and it will eventually, over time, clog the pores. It then catches bacteria and creates more acne. This describes a typical acne outbreak, like whiteheads and blackheads. Unfortunately, it can be far, far worse than that.

Sometimes, you get a sebaceous cyst, which is an oil gland that has developed quite abnormally and therefore causes even greater inflammation. It fills with pus and fatty material to creates a sac, which can burst and cause a terrible infection. It is a tumor, and it appears on areas outside the neck, scalp, or face. The bumps are often painful to touch and difficult to treat. It may not go away for months or even years on its own, but it may eventually go away over time and with the right efforts.

Sebaceous cysts can be the size of a pea or the size of an orange, but they’re typically pink or purple in color. These bumps can feel a variety of different ways, and frankly, it’s advisable in general terms to remove it. Sebaceous cysts are deeper in the skin, meaning they are not superficial acne. As a result, they don’t’ respond well to regular topical acne treatments, like those that contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. To treat a cyst, you will need to schedule an appointment with your dermatologist. They can provide prescription-strength acne medication, or antibiotics, to help reduce the size of your cyst and eventually get rid of it. Cysts are large, painful, and sometimes embarrassing. With a doctor’s help, you can get rid of yours in just a few weeks, maybe even less.
