Is Tea Tree Oil Better Than Benzoyl Peroxide

Tea tree oil is one of the oldest treatments available for acne, yet it’s highly unrecognized. We have forgotten about it since its real introduction in the early 1900’s. Tea tree oil was first introduced for a multitude of purposes because of its antibacterial uses. It’s a great natural treatment for acne, athlete’s foot, lice, nail fungus, and insect bites. But since tea tree oil is only found on one coast of Australia, it’s harder for it to be popular, like benzoyl peroxide, which is much cheaper.

That being said, just because something’s cheaper doesn’t mean it’s better. In fact, usually it’s just the opposite. In this case, scientists have clinically tested the two, both tea tree oil and benzoyl peroxide, and found that they both significantly reduce acne in the time given.  But the difference was that tea tree oil is better than benzoyl peroxide, because it did not cause side effects. In the world of acne medication, that’s a pretty big deal.

Some might find it interesting that tea tree oil has a wide range of uses that extend beyond acne treatment.  In fact, it’s even actually used to treat shingles, which is far more severe than an occasional whitehead. On the other hand, benzoyl peroxide technically does the same basic thing of killing off bacteria, but it is never used in the treatment of shingles. If you can buy some tea tree oil, try dabbing some on your breakouts. It’s a great topical remedy for a variety of ailments, but you don’t know how it will affect you until you try it.
